Projecting Importance

Both The Huffington Post and the Drudge Report enjoy posting unusual stories they likely find newsworthy because of their novelty or shock value. But since both of these sites cover politics with a bit of a partisan edge, does it imply they think such stories are indicative or endemic of something? It's obvious which of the two linked to the following stories, are they attaching more importance or value to them than appropriate?

Via the Post: Murdered Bear Cub Covered In Obama Signs Dumped On University Campus

CULLOWHEE – A dead bear was found dumped this morning on the Western Carolina University campus, draped with a pair of Obama campaign signs, university police said.

Maintenance workers reported about 7:45 a.m. finding a 75-pound bear cub dumped at the roundabout near the Catamount statute at the entrance to campus, said Tom Johnson, chief of university police.

“It looked like it had been shot in the head as best we can tell. A couple of Obama campaign signs had been stapled together and stuck over its head,” Johnson said.

CLEARWATER - Frank Armstrong was preparing to go for a jog this morning when he noticed his Lexus – adorned with a McCain-Palin sticker - had been vandalized with obscenities and a burned American flag.

Armstrong discovered the damage to his 2006 Lexus about 8:30 a.m. at his Sand Key condominium at 1400 Gulf Blvd. Clearwater police and Armstrong said someone etched obscenities and "KKK" into the paint, burned several areas of the car with cigarettes, set the flag on fire on his hood and may have urinated on the vehicle. Officers and Armstrong think the car was singled out because of its political stickers, including one reading "Nobama."
